「光をすくう器たち – パート・ド・ヴェールと過ごす、五月のひととき」

アトリエの窓辺に、やわらかな光が差し込む季節になりました。5月の空は、どこか凛としていて澄んでいます。そんな“五月晴れ”の光を、ガラスの器にそっとすくい取るような気持ちで、この季節は作品づくりをしています。

パート・ド・ヴェールは、粉状のガラスを型に詰めて焼成する、古くから伝わる技法です。繊細な作業ではありますが、その分だけ、光を通したときの表情はとても豊かです。

たとえば、淡い水色やレモン色の器を窓辺に置いてみると、差し込んだ陽の光が器の中でふわりと溶けて、小さな虹のような影を落としてくれます。

私はいつも、その影を見るのが楽しみです。完成したガラスの“向こう側”に現れる色やかたち──

それは、作った本人にも予想がつかない、小さなご褒美のようなものかもしれません。

時折、「初めてなんですけど、体験できますか？」とガラスに興味を持ってくださる方が、アトリエの扉を開けてくださいます。

もちろん、大丈夫です。初めての方でも、色の選び方や型への詰め方から、ゆっくりご案内しています。パート・ド・ヴェールは、見た目の華やかさに反して、とても静かで、心の落ち着くものづくりです。

焼き上がったガラスにそっと光が差し込む瞬間──それは、日常の中にあるちょっとした感動です。ガラスを通して“光と影の美しさ”に気づけるようになると、季節のうつろいも、いつもと少し違って見えてくるかもしれません。

Capturing Light – A Gentle Moment with Pâte de Verre in May

As sunlight filters gently through the windows of the studio, I always know May has arrived.The skies this time of year are strikingly clear, almost dignified in their brightness.During this season, I find myself creating pieces as if to scoop up and hold that quiet, beautiful light in glass.

Pâte de verre is a time-honored technique in which powdered glass is carefully packed into molds and kiln-fired.It may sound delicate—and it is—but the reward is a richness of expression that only this method can achieve.Soft hues of pale blue or lemon yellow, for example, placed by a sunny window, begin to glow from within,casting faint, dreamy shadows that dance across the surface beneath.It always feels like a small kind of magic—light and glass speaking to each other.

One of my favorite parts of the process is seeing those unexpected shadows.They are subtle, quiet surprises, never quite the same, and always more beautiful than I imagined.

Around this time of year, I sometimes receive messages from people saying,"I'm curious about glass... would it be okay to try, even if I've never done it before?"The answer is always yes. Absolutely.

In my classes, beginners are warmly welcomed.We start from the basics—how to choose colors, how to prepare the mold, how to build your piece step by step.Though pâte de verre looks intricate, the experience itself is peaceful and grounding.It’s a kind of making that invites stillness, patience, and intention.

There’s a special moment when the finished piece meets the light for the first time.It catches, reflects, and refracts in ways unique to that piece,and often stirs a quiet joy in the heart of its maker.

Through glass, we begin to notice the dance between light and shadow.And through that awareness, even the passing seasons start to feel a little more vivid, a little more tender.
