皆さんは「パート・ド・ヴェール」というガラス技法をご存知でしょうか？

フランス語で「ガラスの練り粉」という意味を持つこの技法は、古代エジプトに端を発し、アール・ヌーヴォーやアール・デコの時代に再評価され、現代では“ガラスで絵を描く”ような繊細なアートとして愛されています。

パート・ド・ヴェールの最大の魅力は、独特のやわらかく、温もりのある質感にあります。

透明感がありながら、どこか陶器のようなマットな手触り。そして、ガラスの内部に溶け込むような色の重なりやグラデーション。それらが光を受けて、時に神秘的に、時に幻想的に輝きます。

この技法では、まず彫刻や粘土で原型を作り…

…その上から耐火石膏で型を取り、細かく砕いた色ガラスを詰めて焼成します。高温でガラスがゆっくりと溶けて型の中に流れ込み、冷却後に型を壊して取り出すことで、一つひとつが世界にひとつの作品として生まれるのです。つまり、まったく同じものは二度と作れないという、一点ものならではの魅力。時間と手間がかかる分、完成したときの喜びはひとしおです。このコラムでは今後、パート・ド・ヴェールの魅力や、初心者の方でも作品づくりを楽しめる理由、教室の様子などを、少しずつご紹介していきます。ガラスの中に閉じ込められた、世界でたったひとつの物語に、あなたも触れてみませんか？

What is Pâte de Verre?

― Light and Stories Encased in Glass ―

Have you ever heard of a glass art technique called "Pâte de Verre"?This French term literally means "glass paste." The technique dates back to ancient Egypt, saw a revival during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, and is now cherished as a refined art form―like painting with glass.The greatest charm of Pâte de Verre lies in its soft, warm texture―unlike any other form of glass.It has a gentle translucence, yet a matte, almost ceramic feel. Colors blend and layer within the glass, catching light in ways that appear both mystical and dreamlike.The process begins by sculpting a model from clay or wax...

Then, a mold is made using heat-resistant plaster, filled with crushed colored glass, and slowly fired in a kiln. As the glass melts and flows into the mold, a one-of-a-kind piece takes shape. The mold is broken to release the final artwork.

This means no two pieces can ever be the same―each is truly one-of-a-kind.

The time and care involved make the moment of completion all the more rewarding.
